BAPTISMS
CHRISTENING / INFANT BAPTISM, OR THANKSGIVING FOR THE GIFT OF A CHILD
We are delighted when parents contact us enquiring about having a child/children baptised into the Christian faith. As you start to consider this, do join us for a Sunday Service and come and meet the church family into which any child or adult can be baptised. Being christened isn’t just a “rite of passage”. It calls for commitment from family and godparents , and the congregation who will be praying for you all. We take our responsibilities to you seriously and want to make this, not only a joyful occasion but also a helpful introduction to the beginning of your child’s spiritual journey.
As with any major decision, you will want to be sure before you commit yourself.
At a baptism/christening service, parents and godparents make big promises to pray for your child and help her/him to learn about the Christian faith.

That’s why in the Melton Team Parish we ask all parents enquiring about baptism to join a Preparation Session BEFORE we can discuss possible dates for the service with you. This will give you the opportunity to ask questions about the service and its meaning.
At the Preparation Session we will be able to explain why it is a Church of England requirement that all godparents must have been baptised/ christened themselves – because part of the role of godparents is to help encourage their godchild to grow in faith and to help them understand how to live their life in a Christian way.
At the Preparation Session, we’ll also explain that if you do not feel ready to make the baptismal promises, or you have friends you’d like to involve who are not themselves baptised, there is an alternative service called a Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child. Do discuss this option with us if you are unsure about whether now is the right time to make the commitment that baptism involves.
Please also look at the information about both Baptism and Thanksgiving services on the Church of England website https://www.churchofengland.org/life-events/christenings
We hope that those who have been baptised as young children will want to make those promises and commitments for themselves when they are old enough to prepare for Confirmation, and make a personal commitment to follow Jesus Christ.
ADULT BAPTISM AND CONFIRMATION
If you were not christened/ baptised as a child, you may now want to commit to Christ by being baptised and confirmed. A real faith is one which grows, develops and deepens over the years. In Confirmation, we confirm that we believe in Jesus and we are prepared to commit our lives to following Him. It’s the greatest challenge and the most important and worthwhile commitment we can ever make.
Please contact us to arrange a chat with the Vicar to discuss what this would involve for you.
You may find answers to some of your questions at https//.churchofengland.org./life-events/confirmation.
